• Welcome to our final board meeting of the 2017-18 school and fiscal year!
• And welcome to the summer solstice! The Summer solstice represents a time to reflect upon the good fortune we have received over the past year and to look toward new growth! Last Thursday was the longest day of the year, also known as the first day of summer. Though most of us have turned away from our agricultural heritage, the summer solstice remains a time of new beginnings and life-enriching transitions. Just as the summer solstice is symbolic of agricultural growth, it is also symbolic of personal growth. It’s an optimal time to nurture our potential and be open to new learning.
•  Governor Brown should be signing the budget any day now. Although we face some budget challenges over the next several months, there is one very special highlight in the final state budget. It’s quite unusual and it doesn’t happen very often, but there is a line item in the state budget that specifically lists under One-Time Funding that Sweetwater Union High School District will receive $2M for facility upgrades.
  • How does that happen? This kind of special funding consideration is a result of ongoing and persistent collaboration and conversations with our partners in the City of Imperial Beach – Mayor Serge Dedina, City Manager Andy Hall – our legislator Senator Ben Hueso, and Board President Paula Hall. This advocacy started over a year ago when we received the estimated cost of MVH’s pool renovation. After several meetings in IB and at Senator Hueso’s office, a small group of us traveled to Sacramento in March to meet one last time. Much appreciation to Senator Hueso for his leadership in collaboration with Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Adkins and Assembly Member Todd Gloria, for getting us to the finish line – Sweetwater UHSD made the One-Time Funding list. Tonight I especially want to acknowledge Dr. Moises Aguirre for all his “behind the scenes” advocacy on behalf of this project. This would not have even had the chance it did without his negotiations and experience in Sacramento. This is great news and we appreciate everyone working together to make this a reality!
• And speaking of purposeful collaboration, over the next two days, many of us will participate in the California Labor Management Summer Institute. Representatives from our Board of Trustees, Cabinet, CSEA, MASD, SCGA, and SEA will listen to keynote speakers like Dr. Alan Daly from UCSD who will share his research from his book, Social Network Theory and Educational Change, as well as attend breakout sessions. We thank all our partners for joining us!
• Another long-time Sweetwater family member passed away on June 12 at the age of 95. Bobbie Morris, a Chula Vista resident for over 60 years, was active in many civic and political organizations, specifically “Bobbie” was a Sweetwater Board member in the late 1970’s. She was one of the earliest elected women school board members. She and her deceased husband Sidney, lived in the same house since 1955, where three of her four children graduated from CVH. Her independence embodied tenets of women’s rights long before its time. She also served in the women’s branch of the US Coast Guard as a SPAR radio operator mastering Morse Code. As one of the last surviving members of WWII SPARS, Bobbie was recognized in May 2015 with an honor flight and Flag Ceremony presented in Arlington National Cemetery at The Women in Military Service for America Memorial. She will be interred with military honors at Fort Rosecrans on Tuesday. She will be remembered for her decades of service to our district and our community.
• I have said many times in my messages that accomplishments and success do not happen in isolation; it happens because a group of committed people work together, in concert, towards a common goal. As the results demonstrate, this is our normal and preferred practice. Going forward, we will continue in this way because this is what we believe. As we complete our 3^rd year as a Cabinet, we thank you for the opportunity to serve and support each of you!

• Bienvenidos a nuestra última junta de la mesa directiva del ciclo escolar 2017-2018 y del año fiscal.
• ¡Bienvenidos también al solsticio de verano! El solsticio de verano representa tiempo de reflexión sobre la buena fortuna que hemos recibido durante el año y para ver el nuevo crecimiento por venir. El jueves pasado fue el día más largo del año, también conocido como el primer día del verano. Aunque la mayoría de nosotros nos hemos distanciado de nuestra herencia agrícola, el solsticio de verano sigue siendo un momento de nuevos comienzos y transiciones enriquecedoras. Así como el solsticio de verano simboliza el crecimiento agrícola, también es un símbolo del crecimiento personal. Es el momento óptimo para nutrir nuestro potencial y estar abiertos a nuevos aprendizajes.
• El gobernador Brown firmará el presupuesto en cualquier momento. Aunque enfrentamos algunos desafíos presupuestarios en los próximos meses, existe un punto sobresaliente muy especial en el presupuesto estatal final. Es bastante inusual y no ocurre muy seguido, pero hay una línea en el presupuesto estatal que indica específicamente bajo fondos, que se otorgan únicamente una vez, que el distrito Sweetwater Union High School District recibirá $ 2M de dólares para realizar mejoras a las instalaciones.
  • ¿Cómo sucede lo anterior? Este tipo de consideración de financiamiento especial es el resultado de la colaboración y conversaciones constantes y persistentes con nuestros socios de la ciudad de Imperial Beach: El Sr. Serge Dedina, alcalde de la ciudad de Imperial Beach;  Andy Hall, administrador de la ciudad; Ben Hueso, nuestro legislador y senador; y la presidenta de la mesa directiva Paula Hall. Dicha labor inició hace más de un año cuando recibimos el costo estimado de la renovación de la piscina de MVH. Después de varias juntas en IB y en la oficina del Senador Hueso, un pequeño grupo viajamos a Sacramento en marzo para reunirnos por última vez. Mi agradecimiento al Senador Hueso por su liderazgo en colaboración con el Presidente del Senado Pro Tempore Toni Adkins y el Asambleísta Todd Gloria, por llevarnos a la meta: el distrito Sweetwater Union High School Distrito logró quedar en la lista de Financiamiento Único. Esta noche, quiero agradecer especialmente al Dr. Moisés Aguirre por toda su labor “detrás de escena” en nombre de este proyecto, el cual ni siquiera hubiera tenido la oportunidad de realizarse sin sus negociaciones y experiencia en Sacramento. ¡Es una gran noticia y valoramos la colaboración de  todos para hacer realidad el proyecto!
• Hablando de colaboración útil, en los próximos dos días, muchos de nosotros participaremos en el Instituto de Verano de California para la Administración Sindical (California Labor Management Summer Institute). Los representantes de la mesa directiva, el gabinete, CSEA, MASD, SCGA, y SEA escucharán a oradores principales como el Dr. Alan Daly de UCSD que compartirá la investigación que realizó para su libro, Teoría de Redes Sociales y Cambio Educativo, así como también asistirán a las distintas sesiones. ¡Agradecemos a todos los socios por unirse a nosotros!
• Otro miembro de la familia del Distrito de Sweetwater falleció el 12 de junio a la edad de 95 años. Bobbie Morris, residente de Chula Vista durante más de 60 años, participó activamente en muchas organizaciones cívicas y políticas, en específico “Bobbie” fue miembro de la mesa directiva del Distrito de Sweetwater a finales de 1970. La Sra. Morris fue una de las primeras mujeres electas como miembro de la mesa directiva del distrito. Ella y su difunto esposo Sidney, vivieron en la misma casa desde 1955, y tres de sus cuatro hijos se graduaron de CVH. Su independencia personifica los principios de los derechos de las mujeres mucho antes de su tiempo. También prestó su servicio en la rama femenina de la Guardia Costera de los EE. UU. dominando el Código Morse como operadora de radio SPAR. Como uno de los últimos miembros supervivientes de WWII SPARS, Bobbie fue reconocida en mayo de 2015 con un vuelo de honor y una Ceremonia de Bandera presentada en el Cementerio Nacional de Arlington en el Monumento a las Mujeres en Servicio Militar para EE. UU. Será sepultada  con honores militares el martes en el Fuerte Rosecrans, y recordada por sus décadas de servicio a nuestro distrito y nuestra comunidad.

• He mencionado muchas veces en mis mensajes que los logros y el éxito no ocurren de manera aislada; ocurren porque un grupo de personas comprometidas trabajan en colaboración, al unísono, hacia un objetivo común. Tal como lo demuestran los resultados, esa es nuestra práctica habitual y preferida. En el futuro, seguiremos haciendo las cosas de dicha manera porque es en lo que creemos. Al terminar nuestro tercer año como gabinete, les agradecemos la oportunidad de servir y apoyar a cada uno de ustedes.
