Dr. Moisés G. Aguirre was appointed as Superintendent of the Sweetwater Union High School District (SUHSD) on April 26, 2021. After an extensive search, Dr. Aguirre was selected to oversee the largest secondary school district in California for his proven leadership record and many years of working with diverse populations.

In this role, he is responsible for leading the district, which serves approximately 36,000 students in middle and high schools; and approximately 10,000 students at the adult school level.  Preceding this appointment, he served as Interim Superintendent beginning June of 2020.  In this role, he led the district’s efforts to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to his appointment as Interim Superintendent, he served as Assistant Superintendent of Facilities and Operations, having been appointed on April 27, 2015.  In this capacity, he led the Planning and Construction, Nutrition Services, Transportation, Maintenance, and District Architect departments and developed a reputation for excellence.

Prior to his arrival at SUHSD, he served as Executive Director of District Relations and Manager of Charter Schools at San Diego Unified School District from 2007 to 2015.  In this capacity, he worked to provide oversight over the academic programs and operations of charter schools.  In addition, he worked at the University of California, San Diego from 2003 to 2007.  From 2001 to 2003 he served as an appointee of the Governor of California as Deputy Director of the Commission of the Californias to foster collaboration in the binational region of the Californias: California, Baja California, and Baja California Sur.

Dr. Aguirre graduated from Calexico High School and attended the University of California, San Diego, where he received his bachelor’s in Political Science and Spanish/Latin American Literature, with a minor in History. He completed Public Policy and International Affairs at the Institute at UC Berkeley.  He received his Master’s in Public Administration from San Diego State University, and he completed his Doctorate in Education Leadership (Ed.D.) from San Diego State University.

Dr. Aguirre was born in Calexico, California, a small agricultural community on the California-Mexico border.  He is the eldest son born to Moisés and Maria Guadalupe Aguirre. He is happily married to his wife Jessica, and they are proud parents of five children: Alejandro, Natalia, Valeria, Aaron, and Fausto.
