- Welcome everyone! This is the first day back for site staff after the 2-week break. Wednesday is the first day back for students!
- Even though students and site staff have been on break, there’s still much to celebrate:
- San Diego is host to two large symposiums this week and the first week of November. Over the next few days at the America’s Best Urban School’s Symposium, several of our VAPA groups will be featured – CVHS Main Attraction – Director Michael Sakell, SoH Mariachi Estado de Oro – Director David Rodriguez, CVHS String Ensemble –Director Conrad Bruderer. At the ACSA State Summit in early November, BVHS Music Machine –Director Gail Kennedy will be one of only two show choirs chosen to perform! Your hard work pays off!
- Someone we all know is getting recognized by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez with an 80th Assembly District Latino/Filipino Community Leader Award – former SEA President and current on the CTA Board of Directors for District P, Roberto Rodriguez. As a Board Member he represents most of San Diego County and all of Imperial County. Congratulations!
- Recently I was having a conversation with one of our employees. I was given permission to share what happened. That person was sharing about a time in their life when things were getting very difficult, professionally and personally. It was a time of uncertainty for them, and then on top of all that, they got some disturbing news about their health. On their way back to work after that doctor’s appointment, out of the corner of their eye, they noticed a sign that said something about “a story.” This person exited the freeway to look for that sign. Something drew this person to search for what the rest of the sign said. Eventually they found it – a poster on an electrical box that read, “Live a great story.” The message to this employee from that poster meant that living through challenging times is part of our story. That message inspired this person to keep focused knowing that we don’t always control what happens, but we do have control over how we handle it. I want to thank that employee for allowing me to share their “great story.”
- John Green was featured on “60 Minutes” last night. He’s a best-selling author, successful podcaster, and vlogger (YouTube star). We older generation people may not have heard of him, most likely the teenagers in our lives probably have. His secret and success is his authenticity. He’s able to connect with teenagers mostly because he remembers “his own social awkward adolescence.” He struggled in high school with a sense that he could not control his thoughts. He admits he wasn’t a very good student, had a lot of self-destructive impulses, and felt scared all the time. Now “he knows that feeling was a symptom of obsessive-compulsive order (OCD). He writes about it in his recent book, “Turtles All the Way Down,” a best seller for 50 straight weeks. Green’s sincere admission of mental health struggles has gained him lots of loyal fans (a loyal teenage audience) who affectionately refer to themselves as Nerdfighters. His advice to youth today is DFTBA – Don’t forget to be awesome! Be you! Now that is great advice for all of us!
