Superintendent’s Message – August 24, 2015

DrJanneryWeb

I have been meeting with many people, within the district and outside the district at events and meetings. I would like to thank and acknowledge Imelda Genovese, Superintendent’s Assistant, for working miracles every day. She has received numerous phone calls and emails requesting a meeting with the Superintendent. Everyone is being accommodated and given a warm welcome when they arrive for the appointment or scheduling an off-site meeting. I could not do this alone. I really appreciate you Ms. Genovese.

I now have met with our site and district curriculum specialists and our principals and directors regarding my expectations around curriculum implementation, instructional delivery and planning for instruction. First, my assessment of our current state of teaching and learning is that we have some really good structures and practices in place. With that said, it is also important to know that we have a lot of initiatives on our plate as well. The message I have been sharing with staff has been consistent, and that message is I am not expecting anyone to change course.

However, we do need to have more clarity about what is important and research-based; in other words, we need to narrow the focus. My experience and knowledge supports this “clarity of focus” perspective. Second, I have asked teachers and administrators to think about a clarity of focus in our district’s quest for mastery. What does mastery look like in the planning of teaching and learning? Do we have a common understanding of mastery? So, I am asking all of us to look at our work this year through the lens of quality first instruction – what does quality first instruction look like in planning and delivery? I know we will make progress this year because we have the answers within our schools and district. I am confident of this belief!

Today, I attended the Eastlake Educational Foundation Golf Tournament to show our appreciation to EEF and the golfers! It was the first time, I am told, that a SUHSD superintendent has shown up. It was definitely the first time both CVESD and SUHSD superintendents were there together with a common focus and purpose. Our schools, our students and staff are the direct benefactors of EEF’s 20-year commitment to fundraising efforts. We are so grateful for their ongoing efforts.

Finally, I wanted to share that one of our former employees, Dr. Tris Hubbard passed away earlier this year. Tris was an educator for 35 years and worked in SUHSD for 10 years of those years. He served as the Director of Special Services and Director of Student Services as well as the Director of the MAAC Charter School until they could find a permanent replacement. Dr. Hubbard positively influenced and impacted our students and families for many years and we are grateful for his service.

The best way to honor someone who is not with us anymore is to continue living our life and keep their memory alive through everyday connections with our students and families. We know Dr. Hubbard would have wanted that. We send our warm regards to his two surviving sons Kyle Hubbard of Los Angeles and Bruce Hubbard of San Diego.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve and support you!

Sincerely,

Karen Janney, Ed.D.
