  • Lysabeth Luansing-Garcia for being selected as the first recipient of the Secondary Counselor of the Year for all of San Diego County!

    • Sophia Gray, MoH KMMI Coordinator, and Mariana Hughes, ELH teacher, were also recognized as a Chula Vista City Champion!
    • SYH teacher Shelly Poliska and her student Ashley Malaxechevarria were celebrated at the 2000 TODOs Student Achievement Awards dinner. TODOs is a non-profit organization that celebrates equity and excellence in mathematics. Also recognized was CPM teacher Cathy Morgan with student Ana Morales and MVH teacher Becky McKee with student Matthew Nissen.
    • This past weekend Montgomery HS was the host site for the State Vex Robotics Championships. Special shout-out to the organizing team of staff: Joe Amaro, MOH; Chad Pearson, ORH; Kirk Braito, RDR; Carrie Northum, SYH; Sandra Hodge, IS; HH Alum Alex Harley.
    • Congratulations to Olympian High School students Milana Rodriguez, Andrea Viramontes, Maken Morabe and Computer Science teacher Michael “Tony” Claudio for their being awarded as National Center for Women & Information Technology Aspirations Certificate of Distinction awardees! This makes it three years in a row that Olympian HS and Mr. Claudio’s computer science women students have won differing NCWIT awards!
    • GJ students excelled at SDSU’s MESA day. The took 1st Place in the Math Escape Room – Cathlin Goldberg, Christopher Dalay, Alvin Echon; Scratch It Up (Computer Science) Jordan De La Paz & Gavin Blas; and the MESA Machine (Engineering Design Category) Yasmin Serrano & Uziel Boites. GJ is now invited to MESA Regionals on April 4. Their advisor is teacher Adan Escobedo.
    • Our staff is requested often to sit on panels or commissions or to present at conferences because of their expertise and knowledge. Here are a few examples:
    • At the San Diego Counselor Conference Counselor Veronica Sandoval (SOM) co-presented with Principal Julissa Gracias on the topic – Personal Education Plan; Lysabeth Luansing-Garcia (SUHI) & Kristen Ereno (ELH) presented on Student Wellness Initiatives; Lalaine Torres (BVH) presented on How to Take School Counseling to the Next Level by being Social Media Savy; and Dr. Liliana Silva presented at the National School Counseling Leadership Conference on How to Conduct Great School Counseling Learning Walks.
    • Alicia Bena co-presented with Aly Martinez at the Greater San Diego Math Conference on the topic of Accessibility, Inclusion and Mathematics; Anne Marie Almaraz and Melody Morris presented on Building Mathematical Agency. Many of our math teachers attended the conference.
    • Dr. Pilar Vargas, AP at MoH, was named to the Commissioners Bilingual Authorization Refresh Work Group!
    • Dr. Joe Fulcher was a keynote panel member at the RTM Congress on Culture and Equity. The other two panel members were from San Antonio Independent School District and Twin Rivers Unified School District.
    • ELM teacher Antonio Arias was selected as March’s Inspirational Teacher of the Month – NBC 39
    • Coach Manuel Hermosillo, MOH Baseball Coach, achieved his 700th baseball win!
    • Athletics Coordinator Joe Heinz was selected as the next San Diego Section CIF Commissioner! That’s really big news!

    • Friday evening the South Chula Vista Library hosted our student art exhibition and the Awards Reception. At the next board meeting I will announce the winners and share their art! It’s always an opportunity to see the amazing talent of our students and the dedication of our teachers!
